Caloundra State High School has been leading education in this area for over forty years. In that time we have seen a lot of changes in how students learn and how teachers teach. One of the major factors influencing these changes is technology and the digital revolution.
“The Digital Revolution is a fast moving beast. Change is now a constant, not a once every now and then event. Mobile and wireless developments are leading very quickly towards a world of ubiquitous, or ‘everywhere’ computing.” Students now expect and deserve a learning environment that accommodates a mobile lifestyle, integrates today’s digital tools, adapts to individual learning styles and encourages collaboration and teamwork.
From a university in Japan who issue all new students with the iTouch, to Shepparton High School in Victoria who are participating in an international study of mobile learning, to schools and Universities across America, educators across the globe have been experimenting with the use of today’s most mobile digital tool, the Apple iPod Touch (iTouch).
Fifteen Caloundra High teachers from a range of teaching areas and experiences have been investigating ways the iTouch can be utilised within a classroom as a tool to improve teaching practice, student engagement and learning outcomes. As a result of the positive feedback from these initial investigations we have decided to introduce an iTouch Concept Class in year 8 in 2010.
