Mathematics is a powerful and dynamic discipline that has evolved within and across cultures. Our aim at Caloundra High is to make Mathematics an enjoyable and rewarding academic adventure by providing learning experiences that stimulate and inspire students to engage and achieve, through a problem solving focus that integrates technology in a range of practical contexts.
Subject information
Years 7 to 9
All students must take Mathematics as one of their five core subjects, and classes are streamed based on student ability and intended career paths. The flexible class groupings learn at different levels and as individual students’ needs and progress are assessed there is movement between classes over the three years.
Year 10
All students will undertake a Preparation course for the Authority subjects in Years 11 and 12. The students will choose the level of mathematics that matches their success level at the end of Year 9. This will allow students to experience a level of Mathematics before having to choose a level for Year 11.
Years 11 and 12
Authority subjects - Mathematics A, Mathematics B and Mathematics C. It is not possible to study Mathematics C without also studying Mathematics B.
Authority-registered subject - Pre Vocational Mathematics (PVM) caters for students wishing to enhance their numeracy skills but who are not seeking tertiary studies in Mathematics.
Special Programs
- Junior Mathematics Extension Class - year 7 - 9 students are challenged and extended with a range of enrichment activities designed to further stimulate their interest in Mathematics.
Essential Mathematics - this is an alternative pathway for the year 7 to 9 who have not achieved success with the national curriculum. There are extra in class tutors and learning support staff and students are able to change back to the national curriculum syllabus if their results show sufficient improvement.
