At Caloundra SHS we aim to provide our students with the abilities to work
scientifically, enabling them to reach a deeper understanding of the world.
Our subjects are designed to stimulate their interests, and develop their appreciation of how science can be used to explore and understand our changing world. These subjects give opportunities for students to practice science inquiry skills, to gain foundation knowledge across the science disciplines; and to communicate scientific understanding and make evidence-based decisions.
In years 7-9, students study Science as per the Australian Curriculum. This ensures they receive a basic understanding of the four science disciplines - biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.
In semester one of year 10, students can elect to complete either Science foundations, which covers the four domains of science, or they can select two of the five subject areas, one per term; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Marine Science.
Science is optional in semester two and students who continue in this subject can elect to continue in a specialty area.
In their senior years, students can specialise and may choose from the five science subjects.
The Science faculty has a dynamic, experienced teaching staff, as well as two Scientific Officers who assist in the preparation of numerous science experiments. The 6 modern science laboratories, are fully equipped with digital technologies – data loggers, laptops, wireless network, and audio-visual facilities.
