School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs)
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) provide Year 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to combine school, paid work, and formal training. It is an excellent pathway for students who are motivated to gain hands-on experience and start building their future career while still completing their senior studies.
Program Overview
SATs are completed while students remain enrolled at school. At our school, students typically attend classes four days per week and participate in paid employment and training on the Flexible Timetabled Day (Wednesday).
Through a SAT, students can:
- Gain a nationally recognised qualification
- Develop practical, job-ready skills
- Build confidence and workplace experience
- Earn an income while learning
- Develop strong work ethic and employability skills
-
Student Commitment
Entering into a SAT involves signing a formal training contract with an employer and a registered training organisation (RTO). This is a significant commitment and requires students to:
- Attend both school and work consistently
- Complete workplace tasks and on-the-job training
- Undertake theory components such as workbooks or online modules
- Participate in any required training workshops
Successful completion of a SAT contributes credits towards a student's Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
Finding an Employer
Students are responsible for securing their own apprenticeship or traineeship. This can be done by:
- Exploring career interests and industry options
- Applying for opportunities advertised through school
- Transitioning from an existing casual or part-time job into a SAT
- Contacting local businesses directly (networking or cold calling)
- Seeking guidance and support from the school's Industry Liaison Officer
